My Contribution to Family Thanksgiving

Every year without fail, my mother serves up a Thanksgiving dinner fit for a king and his court. She wakes up well before dawn on the last Thursday of November, eager and raring to cook. My sister lives just a few miles away from the old family homestead, and she comes over to prepare a few of the side dishes. By the time I or any other guests arrive, hors d’oeuvres are being served and the Detroit Lions are already trailing their opponents by at least 10 points in the annual Thanksgiving Day game.

Just to get back home, I have to drive for most of the morning. This fact precludes any notions I might have about helping with the cooking. Even though I offer to do most of the dishes at the end of the meal, my mom won’t hear of it. Still, I feel the need to contribute something, which is why I always tote along a few fall gift baskets. They’re a small but significant token of my appreciation, and I think they make an impact.
